The right door here is decided by three things: the weather, the house, and the opening. Weather first: hail is the reason we recommend a heavier-gauge steel skin or a door with an impact-rated top section on any south- or west-facing garage, and an insulated door for an attached garage, because the summer heat and the January cold both come through a single-skin door into the rooms above and beside it. The house decides the look, and a carriage-style door on a Brookside bungalow or a flush contemporary door on a newer build in Lee's Summit is a matter of matching what is already there. The opening decides the rest: low headroom under an older garage, a sloped floor, or a wood frame that has moved all change the track and the spring that will fit. The old door comes down in the morning and the springs are released before anything else is touched.
