Step 1: Don't Force It
STOP. If your garage door is stuck, do NOT try to force it open or closed. Forcing can:
- Damage the door permanently
- Injure your hands or fingers
- Break expensive components (springs, opener, cables)
- Make the problem worse
Leave the door as it is and move to Step 2.
Step 2: Check the Opener Power
Is your garage door opener working?
- Press the button on your wall opener. Do you hear clicking sounds?
- Listen near the opener motor. Is there any sound at all?
- Check if the opener light is on
If no sound: The opener may be unplugged or have lost power. Check the power outlet and plug.
If clicking but door doesn't move: Springs or cables may be broken. DON'T try to use the opener.
Step 3: Check the Tracks
Look at the tracks on both sides of the door (but from a safe distance).
- Is anything blocking the track? (objects, dirt, ice)
- Are the tracks bent or damaged?
- Are the rollers off the track?
If something is blocking: Carefully remove the object (if safe to do so).
If tracks are bent: Don't try to fix it yourself. This requires professional repair.
Step 4: Try Manual Operation (If Safe)
Most garage doors have a manual release handle:
- Look for a red rope or handle hanging from the garage door opener motor
- Pull the handle toward the door to disengage the automatic opener
- Now try to manually lift the door (it should be lighter)
Warning: A door with broken springs can be VERY HEAVY (200+ lbs). Do not try if you're unsure.
Common Causes of Stuck Doors
Broken Spring
You'll hear a loud BANG or POP when a spring breaks. The door will be very heavy. DO NOT attempt to operate.
Broken Cable
If you see a cable hanging or separated from the pulley, don't use the door.
Misaligned Tracks
Tracks get bent from impacts or age. The door binds and won't move smoothly.
Off-Track Roller
If the door looks crooked or one side is lower than the other, a roller came off.
Broken Opener
The motor works but the door doesn't move. Something inside the opener is broken.
